I Had Fun!

My school had a dance a while ago (and when I say a while I mean 2 months ago:) My school calls dances “Stomps”, which doesn’t make sense until you go to one and see that none of the guys ever dance with the girls. You can’t really blame them because if you do dance with someone people will video tape you. No joke, they really will. All “Stomps” are planned by the student leaders, and I am a student leader, so I knew about it before the rest of the student body. Because of this I had a lot of time to plan an outfit.

The final outfit was Black skinny jeans with orange shirt, turquoise tank-top, black hat with orange ribbon (not the hat in the picture, we decided on a different black hat last-minute, but it did still have the same ribbon), and a scarf that I made myself. The scarf is easy to make and I will probably do a tutorial on it sometime. The outfit was a success and I had a great time.

Easter Sunday

For my Easter dress this year my mom and I did, not a remodel, but a make over. I found out recently that my great-grandmother was quite the sewer. She would make my grandmother a new dress for every occasion big or small. One of these dresses that she got when she was about my age she kept, and had me try on. Success! It fits almost perfectly. ( Just a little tall in the torso.)

The zipper was a little hashed, but that is to be expected in a dress that is 50 years old. So we put in a new zipper. After finding the perfect shade of pink jacket, we have a very cute Easter outfit for a beautiful but chilly morning.

The pin you see on the jacket is what I was making in my previous post, WEATHER REPORT. If you want to make the pin, click HERE. I made mine a little larger than she did, 3-1/2″ base, and used about 2-1/2 yards of rick rack. ¬†It was easy!

I hope you all had a great Easter.

P.S. Happy April fools day! Tell me of any pranks you play!

Its So Beautiful!!!!!!!!

So cute! My mom thinks that it’s almost too adult for a twelve-year-old, but I don’t think so.

My mom is a miracle worker! This is so pretty. The pin she made is a nice accent,  too.

When you combine all that with $3.00 thrift store high heels, this becomes the ultimate party outfit.

I can’t believe that I fit in it. So very happy that I do though.

Wedding Dress Blue

About 50 years ago my Grandmother, Carmen, made my mother a dress.  She was a very good seamstress and sewed and sewed a princess wardrobe for her only daughter.

Mom kept a few of the most special things and a while back dug this dress out.  It needed a zipper and a little TLC, but the craftsmanship and care in construction was evident. Also evident was that, while Daughter is taller than mom, she is a similar build.  Maybe the dress would fit.

So, I replaced the zipper, using Carmen’s machine, for luck.

Then, today it was time for a serious soak in hot water and Oxyclean.  You could tell the fabric had yellowed over time by looking at it, but the appearance of the water is always a slightly gross shock.

A short delicate wash and dry cycle and some ironing later it was time for the big test: would it fit?

I am so excited! True, its not chocolate brown, but its still going to be cute! Thank you mom.

Wedding Dress Blue

Lace dresses are all the rage right now.  Daughter has been longing for one…and I had some sheet lace in my big pile of junk.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

But it is white lace and the dresses she dreams of are colored.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Having heard of dyeing, I decided it was worth a try.  I hoped the lace was nylon, which takes dye better than polyester.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

It looked hopeful in the dye bucket.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

But, after rinsing, it faded to a sort of taupe color, not white, but not at all the rich chocolate brown we were hoping for.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So, now what do I do?  Here are a few possibilities for lining….It might still be worth a try…Drat!  It is disappointing, even though I sort of figured it would happen, it still isn’t what I wanted…The lighter fabric has a beautiful shimmer to it, but it would be very sophisticated for a 12-year old…On the other…

Too Much Time On My Hands

For the past little while I have had way too much time on my hands. If you’re wondering why, it’s¬†because¬†I had heart surgery on January¬†tenth. Thank you for everything you guys have done, and for all the kindness you have shown me. I am completely recovered and back to school and dancing and hopefully lots of sewing.

Anyway,  I had a lot of time to work while I was recovering so I finished that afghan I was working on.

It is a simple, giant granny square (58″ square) ¬†with lots of bright colors–two rows of color (any color really) and one row of white. It is a birthday present for a family member.

Thank you all for everything you do,
