Homemade Tortillas

These are delicious. Definitely a favorite for Breakfast or anything else you feel like.

3 cups unbleached flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon salt

4-6 tablespoons warm shortening

1 1/4 cups hot water

Mix all dry ingredients in medium sized bowl. Heat water in a glass measuring cup (I used the microwave), and then add the shortening to the water to warm it (Just easier that way). Add the water and shortening to your dry ingredients and mix thoroughly.

Roll out the tortillas fairly thin. I experimented with size quite a bit, so just make them as big/small as you want them. Have a skillet heating while you’re rolling them out, that way it’ll be ready to go when you’re ready to start cooking. Keep the skillet on about medium heat and cook each side of the tortillas until the bubbles are about golden-brownish. Then chuck something tasty on them.

My current favorite thing to do with them is to spread them with butter and cinnamon sugar and dip them in Fresh Fruit Salsa.

  2. Sounds great! I used to make a lot of Navajo fry bread, which isn’t so different, just not flat. Yummy with honey. =)
